Canada Issues Travel Advisory for Puerto Vallarta Amid Rising Violence
The Canadian government has issued a travel advisory for the coastal city of Puerto Vallarta and surrounding areas in the Mexican state of Jalisco, following a surge in violence that has caused road blockades, burning of vehicles, and clashes between federal authorities and armed groups. The advisory warns Canadians to 'shelter in place' and suspends all taxi and rideshare services in the area.
The violence is reportedly a response to a federal operation targeting the municipality of Tapalpa, located 300 kilometers southeast of Puerto Vallarta. Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro stated that individuals have burned vehicles and blocked roads to hinder the movement of people.
Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as 'El Mencho' and the leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was reportedly killed during this operation. The CJNG is one of Mexico's most influential criminal organizations.
Canadian Airlines Cancel Flights
Tim Spencer, a 39-year-old Toronto resident on vacation in Puerto Vallarta, described the scene as 'horrific' with fires burning in the city, corner stores, and cars. His flight to Denver, which would have taken him back to Toronto, was canceled due to the ongoing security situation.
Air Canada announced on social media that it had temporarily suspended operations in Puerto Vallarta due to the security concerns. Flights from Vancouver to Puerto Vallarta on WestJet and Flair Airlines were also canceled.
This situation highlights the ongoing challenges in maintaining safety and security in certain regions of Mexico, prompting the Canadian government to issue travel advisories and airlines to adjust their schedules accordingly.
